Student Development Theories in Action

This weeks discussion board had me in all the feels for my students.

The question was…
Student Affairs professionals job searching are often asked to describe what they identify the student development theory that shapes their work in the field.  If you are are asked this question, how would you respond?  Be sure to give a brief overview of the theory and why you believe this theory is the best one to use in student affairs work.

This is my personal take on this question.

Baxter Magolda’s Theory of Self-Authorship

Baxter Magolda defines self-authorship as “the internal capacity to define one’s beliefs, identity, and social relations” and answers the three questions, How do I know?  Who Am I?  How do I want to construct relationships with others?

 (Evans et al.,2010, p.184).

There are four phases in this theory towards self – authorship…
Phase 1: Following Formulas
Phase 2: Crossroads
Phase 3: Becoming the Author of One’s Life
Phase 4: Internal Foundation

From the start, parents usually have an large influence in where the students are going to college. I know I personally knew nothing more than Baylor… I grew up watching my father bleed Green and Gold why would I not also? I would not change it.. but I also did not explore much of anything else. I take this in account when working with students, especially in their sophomore year. This is where they start the “crossroads” phase usually. They are unhappy with their major, their boyfriend etc. what ever the crossroads may be, we as higher education professionals have to be extremely aware of this phase and help them form and grow into the next phase. Phase 3 is one of the most rewarding to be a part of as the students are develop their own morals, their own strengths. The pressure’s from high school start to loose grip and they become confident in themselves. I personally can feel close to home on this aspect also due to my parents and I butting heads plenty towards the end of college. Phase 4 is also amazing to me as I love lasting relationships and being intentional with my students and co- workers. This phase touches on being grounded in your own belief system. My mother to this day says, ” You are an adult and have learned to form your own opinions from your personal experiences.” I like to cling to the word GRIT in this instance.

After the reflection of this weeks discussion board, I would say to summarize how I feel this Student Development Theory best relates to me is that I am extremely passionate about the fact that in order to develop self-authorship, students need to build their confidence in all aspects of their life, building a foundation inner voice. I love nothing more than being a little piece of encouraging that inner voice.
“Students who worked with advisers who encouraged reflection in goal setting and intentional planning and discussed with students their nonacademic life experiences were more likely to develop abilities and perspectives associated with self-authorship” (Evans et al., 190).
This weekend there is something special brewing in the air. It is #GAMEDAY… so after I sweat with Stephen this morning at 360 Fitness I will head to Houston to cheer with my faves on the #HoustonRockets Launch Crew.
Busy days are where I thrive and maybe it is just because I was awake at 5:00 am and could not go back to sleep, but God has been tugging at my heart and in my ear constantly lately. I am so grateful for a clear mind and heart to allow myself to start HEARING him more. He is always there but sometimes we allow ourselves to hear EVERYTHING but Him, and then blame him?! He is not answering our prayers? Why should he… do you believe with ALL of your heart? #humility
I took specific time to read in James. Mainly books 4-5. There is a lot in here that really hits the nail on the head so bluntly. Tyler House of Faith spoke on this last night too but more specifically in Acts 6,7,8…
I wanted to share parts of my morning that spoke to me most.
James 4 – Get Serious
1-2 Where do you think all these appalling wars and quarrels come from? Do you think they just happen? Think again. They come about because you want your own way, and fight for it deep inside yourselves. You lust for what you don’t have and are willing to kill to get it. You want what isn’t yours and will risk violence to get your hands on it.
Reminding me to practice being #dedicated to selflessness, grace and forgiveness.
4-6 You’re cheating on God. If all you want is your own way, flirting with the world every chance you get, you end up enemies of God and his way. And do you suppose God doesn’t care? The proverb has it that “he’s a fiercely jealous lover.” And what he gives in love is far better than anything else you’ll find. It’s common knowledge that “God goes against the willful proud; God gives grace to the willing humble.”
Leave your pride at the door. Do your job, and focus on nothing of this world but instead Him… reminding me to also practice #humility more often than not.
7-10 So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud NO to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.
GIVE IT ALL TO HIM… stop dabbling…
Jame 5 – Destroying Your Life from Within
Be Patient
7 Brothers, be patient until the Lord comes again. A farmer is patient. He waits for his valuable crop to grow from the earth. He waits patiently for it to receive the first rain and the last rain. 8 You, too, must be patient. Do not give up hope. The Lord is coming soon. 9 Brothers, do not complain against each other. If you do not stop complaining, you will be judged guilty. And the Judge is ready to come! 10 Brothers, follow the example of the prophets who spoke for the Lord. They suffered many hard things, but they were patient. 11 We say they are happy because they were able to do this. You have heard about Job’s patience. You know that after all his trouble, the Lord helped him. This shows that the Lord is full of mercy and is kind.
Stephen or any of my Students at UT can tell you… Patience is something I have to truly, truly practice every, single, day. It does NOT come easy for me. But nothing good comes easy, and instead takes time to grow and flourish. #purposedriven
Let God Plan Your Life
15 So you should say, “If the Lord wants, we will live and do this or that.” 16 But now you are proud and you brag. All of this bragging is wrong. 17 And when a person knows the right thing to do, but does not do it, then he is sinning.

Through this I was inspired to do a “5 Days of Dedication Detox” challenge, leaving all pride at the door and reaching out to others FOR accountability and to give it, to truly re position and re train myself to function how my DNA was created to. I will be sharing this event – if you want to join or more info on my heart let me know!

Tiny Beginnings

I guess the title is somewhat fitting considering Maggie is 4’11 and I am 5’7, even though I claim 5’8 on a good day, or when I wear boots.  This is the start of something big.  Something that is written in Jeremiah 29:11.  “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

It all started with an argument, a lot of big decisions in our relationship begin here, it’s what happens when two extremely passionate people get married, your passions don’t cool off they are fuel for the other’s fire and sometimes that can clash.  We were driving around Waco, where we met and really grew up, talking about where we would live.  We were getting married in two weeks and had no clue where we were going to go.  We had the wedding planned, the honeymoon booked and that was about it.  While driving around Waco I got online and applied for all of the tiny home shows that HGTV had to offer.  We loved the idea of living efficiently and we both do not need much so we figured why not?  Thirty minutes later we hear back from a casting producer wanting to interview us and this tiny home idea took off!

Coming up with plans may seem easy when you are dealing with something under 300 square feet, WRONG! We quickly realized that in order for this not to feel like just a small space that we are forced to live in we need to utilize every ounce of space that we could possibly squeeze out of a trailer.  Bringing me to my next point, the trailer.  We had tossed the idea of a flatbed truck around, didn’t really like it. Then Maggie’s dad (#ThanksTim) said he had an old, and I mean old, flatbed, gooseneck trailer on some land of his.  This is a huge piece of the puzzle in the tiny home world.  It’s your foundation.  After getting wheels on this sucker, (with great thanks to Chris, Wendy and Brittany LaVergne; your wedding gift is literally the foundation of our home!)  we were able to use the help of a friend, Chance Feagins, to haul it to Brownsboro, Texas where the build would begin.

If you have not seen my version of MTV Cribs check it out! It is our first update and gives the layout on how we will build our home! MTV CRIBS – TINY HOME EDITION EPISODE !

This is the first post of many to come! BUT PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOLED, THIS BLOG IS NOT ABOUT OUR TINY HOME! Refer back to the little bio on us when I said there will be posts about Jesus, fitness and Baylor football (because that’s all we need right?) as well.  For all of my crossfit folks out there The Fittest Man on Earth, Rich Froning says; “Crossfit is what I do for a living but it’s not who I am, it is my platform to reach out to people…putting Christ first.” “He uses this platform to reach people in order to live their life for Christ.”  That is the sole purpose of this blog.  Maggie and I have a pretty abnormal, crazy life: from tiny homes to professional cheerleading teams I sometimes think we are more of the entertainment for our family than anything else.  Our goal here is to document all of the amazing and crazy things that happen in our life BUT that is ONLY to POINT STRAIGHT TO CHRIST.
